What is the Difference Between 3D and 3D Laser Scanning?

Short answer: They refer to the same technology; the difference lies only in language and spelling preference.

3D = Abbreviation for three-dimensional (three-dimensional)
3B = Abbreviation for three-dimensional (three-dimensional) in Turkish
Both terms describe scanning a structure with millimeter precision using X, Y, Z coordinates and saving it as a point cloud. The devices, software, and output formats used are the same.

Why Are Two Different Terms Used in Practice?

International projects and English documentation
In this context, the term "3D Laser Scanning" is generally preferred. Foreign stakeholders, BIM software, and technical specifications mostly use the 3D terminology.

Turkish official reports, restoration and strengthening projects
In these areas, the term "3D Laser Scanning" is more common. In municipal, public institution, and engineering reports, 3B is used as the Turkish equivalent of "three-dimensional".

BIM and engineering offices
In scan-to-BIM, as-built, and clash detection processes, "3D" is mostly preferred; It is compatible with software languages such as Revit and Navisworks.

Municipal and Public Tenders
In tender documents, the terms “3D laser scanning” or “three-dimensional laser scanning” may appear together. When submitting a bid, it is useful to clarify both terms in the scope definition.

3D/3D Laser Scanning vs. 2D Measurement?

2D measurement only produces data in the plan plane (X-Y); elevation (Z) is either absent or limited. Single-layer plan measurements taken with traditional rulers, laser meters, or total stations fall into this category.

3D/3D laser scanning, on the other hand, records the full volumetric geometry. Three-dimensional information such as facade depth, ceiling height, pipeline location, column plumb misalignment, beam deflections, deformation, and slope is directly available in the point cloud. Therefore, in restoration, reinforcement, industrial plant, and QA/QC projects, it is not a replacement for 2D measurement; it is a different data level.

Which Search Term Should I Use?

If your project team and official institutions expect a report in Turkish, search for “3D laser scanning.” If international stakeholders, foreign consultants, and BIM software are involved, use the phrase “3D laser scanning.”

You can use both terms when requesting quotes — the scope of service is the same. The important thing is not the terminology, but the clear definition of the output to be delivered (point cloud, 2D drawing, BIM model, etc.).

Important Notes

Searches such as “3D project” or “3D railway” are not related to laser scanning; they may refer to different industry abbreviations. Clearly stating “3D laser scanning” in the technical proposal process will prevent confusion.

Similarly, a search for “3D scanning” may sometimes include phone/tablet LiDAR or low-sensitivity devices. In professional engineering projects, the device type (e.g., Leica RTC360), accuracy class, and delivery standard must be specified in the offer.
