What is 3D Quality Control (QA/QC)?

3D quality control (QA/QC) is the verification, through three-dimensional measurement, of how well a manufactured or assembled structure/product conforms to the design model or technical specifications. Instead of classic tape measures or single-point measurements, a point cloud obtained by laser scanning scans the entire surface; deviations are reported visually and numerically.

The practical answer to the question "What is 3D quality control?" is: It is the process of overlaying the field and project results and measuring differences at the millimeter-centimeter level.

Are QA and QC the Same?

QA (Quality Assurance)
Correct process structuring: measurement plan, tolerances, control points, report standard.

QC (Quality Control)
Checking the result: scanning → comparison → deviation map → acceptance/rejection/correction.

In the field, when "3D QA/QC" is mentioned, it often refers to both together: planned scanning + measurable report.

How is it done?

1. Reference is determined: 3D design model (BIM/CAD) or approved manufacturing drawing
2. Site is scanned: As-built point cloud is obtained with a 3D laser scanner
3. Overlay: The point cloud and the model are aligned in the same coordinate system
4. Deviation analysis: Distance differences are calculated; a heatmap (color map) is generated
5. Report: Out-of-tolerance areas, sections, and measurement summary are delivered

Difference from classical inspection: Sampling of almost the entire surface instead of individual points; overlooked curvature, distortion, and assembly displacements become visible.

Where is it used?

- Prefabricated/precast element assembly inspection
- Steel structure and facade panel placement
- Industrial plant pipe-equipment placement
- Reinforced concrete manufacturing and post-formwork verification
- Existing-project difference before strengthening/renovation
- Tank, silo, and custom manufacturing geometry inspection

What does it offer?

- Early detection: Seeing the deviation before assembly is complete
- Fewer field discussions: The question "how many mm deviations?" is linked to the report
- Reduced revision costs: Reduced risk of remanufacturing or disassembly/reassembly
- Traceable archive: Point cloud + report enters the project memory

Points to Consider

- Tolerances (e.g., ±5 mm / ±10 mm) must be written down on-site
- Comparison is misleading if the reference model is not up-to-date
- Heatmaps should not be generated before the coordinate system and units are clarified
- "We have done a scan" alone is not QA/QC; the deviation report is part of the delivery
