What is 3D Laser Scanning?
3D laser scanning is the process of converting physical structures and terrains into three-dimensional point cloud data by scanning them with a laser beam. Thanks to this technology, buildings, facilities, historical structures, or open spaces can be modeled digitally with millimeter precision; measurement time is shortened, human error is reduced, and reliable data is obtained for BIM, survey, or restoration projects.
How Does 3D Laser Scanning Work?
The scanner device sends laser pulses; the distance and angle information of the beams reflected from the surfaces are collected. These points are connected to produce a point cloud consisting of millions of coordinates. This data is then used in BIM software (Revit, AutoCAD), analysis, and visualization tools. As KG Engineering, we provide services in Istanbul and throughout Turkey with 3D laser scanning devices such as the Leica RTC360.
Applications of 3D Laser Scanning
- Architectural and construction surveying, as-built documentation
- Scan to BIM and digital twin creation
- Pipeline and construction measurement in industrial facilities
- Documentation in historical building and restoration projects
- Structural strengthening and deformation analysis
- QA/QC quality control and design-implementation comparison
Advantages of 3D Laser Scanning
Speed and efficiency, millimeter precision, recording of every detail of the structure, remote scanning of hard-to-reach areas, and digital archiving of all data are the main advantages of 3D laser scanning.
