What is Handheld LiDARI Indoor Scanning?

What is Handheld LiDARI Indoor Scanning?

Handheld LiDARI indoor scanning involves collecting 3D geometry along a walking route within the interior spaces of buildings, factories, parking lots, tunnels, or historical structures using lasers and position sensors. The goal is to record walls, columns, ceilings, pipelines, and details as a point cloud; this then provides input for surveying, as-built drawings, or Scan to BIM processes. Since GNSS is generally not usable indoors, SLAM-based handheld LiDAR systems are the most frequently preferred method in this field.

What is its Practical Use?

Handheld LiDAR allows for quick "walk-through" scanning when tripod setup is difficult or time-consuming in enclosed spaces. It is used for pre-renovation condition assessment, in-facility pipe/equipment inventory, geometry before clash analysis, and as the first documentation layer in restoration projects. It reduces the need for site visits during surveying and BIM modeling processes.

Who Seeks It?

Searches such as “handheld lidar interior”, “interior lidar scanning”, “factory scanning handheld lidar”, and “Scan to BIM handheld lidar” often lead to questions like: Will room-by-room scanning be done? Will ceiling height be a problem? Is Revit/IFC delivery possible? Will sufficient detail be obtained in the restoration project?

Important Considerations

In interior spaces, mirrors, glass facades, empty corridors, and repetitive geometry can reduce SLAM performance. The level of detail (pipe diameter, small profile, facade carving) should be clarified at the beginning of the project; handheld LiDAR is ideal for quick general geometry, while hybrid planning with a stationary 3D laser scanner provides more reliable results for projects requiring millimeter-accurate references and complex facade details. The coordinate system, merging quality, and noise reduction should be checked before delivery.
