What is El LiDARI?

KG Engineering Communications

What is Handheld LiDARI?

Handheld LiDARI (portable/handheld LiDAR) is a scanning system that measures distance and tracks real-time position using laser pulses while the operator moves around the field, either in their hand or on a shoulder strap. Unlike 3D laser scanners that are stationary on tripods, it collects data while in motion; most systems use SLAM (simultaneous positioning and mapping) or GNSS-assisted positioning. The output is still in point cloud format; LAS/LAZ, E57, or processed mesh/CAD/BIM delivery is planned according to the project objective.

What is its Practical Use?

It reduces tripod setup time in narrow corridors, complex interiors, plant lines, and hard-to-reach areas. It speeds up as-built documentation, rapid geometry collection before surveying, site exploration, and the "initial scan" phase. In most projects, handheld LiDAR complements a stationary scanner (e.g., Leica RTC360): handheld LiDAR provides speed and reach, while the stationary scanner provides millimeter-accurate reference and detail quality.

Who Seeks This?

Search terms like "what is handheld lidar," "handheld lidar," "portable lidar scanning," and "mobile lidar scanner" generally ask: What's the difference from tripod scanning? Is the accuracy class sufficient? Will there be SLAM drift? What format is delivered? Architectural offices, restoration teams, facility engineers, and users seeking field speed in infrastructure projects encounter this term.

Important Considerations

Handheld LiDAR is not a "do-it-all" device. Without written definitions of coverage, target accuracy, coordinate system (local or geodetic), registration, and delivery standard, the point cloud work value is not fully realized. SLAM drift can increase in conditions such as long corridors, glass surfaces, low texture, and open areas without GNSS; cross-checking with a ground control point (GCP) and/or a fixed scanner should be planned in critical projects.

KG Engineering

As KG Engineering, an Istanbul-based engineering firm, we plan handheld LiDAR and fixed 3D laser scanning processes together according to the project objective.
