What is an Epoch?

In surveying and positioning, an epoch is the timestamp of an observation or coordinate. Especially in GNSS measurements, since satellite geometry and atmospheric conditions change over time, the answer to the question "to which moment does this coordinate belong?" is related to the epoch.

Why is it Important?

If GNSS data taken at different days/times or solutions from different software are not processed using the same epoch and reference, inconsistencies may occur in map sheets, applications, and drone outputs.

Use in Cartography

Epoch information provides transparency in technical reports in geodetic networks, ground control points (GCPs), and field-office coordinate transfer.
