What is a Laser Scanning Device?
A laser scanning device is a measurement system that collects millions of 3D points from a structure or site. Fixed scanners on tripods (e.g., Leica RTC360), handheld LiDARs, and mobile/vehicle-mounted systems belong to the same family; the difference lies in distance, speed, accuracy, and site reach. The device is not simply a "camera"; it is considered in conjunction with a station plan, assembly, coordinate system, and delivery format.
What is its Practical Use?
It digitizes the existing situation; the output is a point cloud, 2D survey, as-built drawing, or Scan-to-BIM model depending on the project. The laser scanning method is defined; device selection is based on scale, detail, and site conditions.
