What is Laser Scanning Surveying?

Laser scanning surveying is the process of measuring and documenting an existing structure or space on-site using 3D laser scanning; the resulting data is then converted into a point cloud, 2D/3D drawing, or BIM model. While traditional surveying involves measuring individual points, laser scanning surveying records surfaces simultaneously with millions of points.

In practice, searches for "laser scanning surveying" often ask: Is laser surveying sufficient instead of traditional surveying? Is the output a drawing or a point cloud? What level of detail is required in a restoration project?

Outputs after Laser Scanning Surveying
Point cloud (LAS/LAZ, E57), 2D architectural plans/sections, 3D models, Scan to BIM files, and digital archives are the main outputs produced after laser scanning surveying. Depending on project needs, only a point cloud or a full BIM model can be delivered.

Important Notes

Laser scanning surveying alone does not mean "drawing delivery." Issues that need to be clarified before delivery include: level of detail (LOD), coordinate system, drawing standard (AutoCAD/Revit), reflective surfaces such as glass/mirrors, and scanning scope. Comparing prices and timelines without these definitions can be misleading.
