What is a point cloud?

What is a Point Cloud?
A point cloud is a dense set of points representing a surface or volume with X-Y-Z coordinates. It is the “raw geometry” layer in 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry outputs; much of CAD, mesh, SYM/SAM, or BIM production is derived from it.
What is its Practical Use?
It is used for cross-sectioning without revisiting the site, performing volume/area checks, overlap analysis, and validating geometry before Scan to BIM. It is the technical backbone of “3D/3B laser scanning” and “BIM/laser” searches.
Who Searches for it?
Search terms like “point cloud,” “laser scan,” and “3D scan output” often ask: How to decide on the file format (LAS/LAZ, E57, etc.), density, color/realistic texture, and coordinate system?
Things to Consider
A point cloud alone is not the “product”; Record merging, noise removal, LOD/level of detail, and delivery standard definition are essential for achieving full business value.
