What is pointless scanning?

Targetless scanning (or point-free scanning) is the process of collecting data in 3D laser scanning without placing a reference target on the site, and combining the records with geometric features or SLAM-based positioning. The output is still in point cloud format; the difference lies in the merging and validation method.
What is it used for in practice?
It provides rapid documentation in areas where target placement is difficult, risky, or impossible — operational facilities, historical surfaces, traffic-accessible areas. It is frequently used in handheld LiDAR and some mobile scanning systems. It is suitable for as-built exploration, indoor walk-throughs, and general geometry collection.
Who seeks it?
Searching for "targetless scanning" generally asks: Is targetless scanning accurate enough? Will there be SLAM drift? When is verification with GCP necessary? What should the delivery format be?
Things to consider
Targetless scanning does not mean "targetless = faster = sufficient" in every project. Glass, mirrors, empty corridors, and repetitive geometry increase the error rate of the integration. In critical as-built, zoning map alignment, or millimeter-precise reference work, cross-checking with target + GBP (Ground Control Point) should be planned.
