Three-Dimensional Documentation and Geometric Deviation Analysis of Tanks
Within the scope of the Ceyhan Polypropylene (PP) Production Facility, we conducted a 3D tank analysis study to determine the existing geometries of the tanks and to examine deviations in their body surfaces. Using a Leica RTC360 terrestrial laser scanner, we recorded the scannable surfaces of the tanks in three dimensions from data obtained from different stations.
We combined the field surveys in Cyclone REGISTER 360 software to create the point clouds that formed the basis of the analyses. During the analysis phase, we evaluated surface deviations by comparing the tank bodies with reference cylinder geometries. We examined the geometric changes in different regions of the tanks using horizontal and vertical cross-sections.
Documenting Tank Geometry: We documented the tanks' current state at the time of measurement by transferring their hull surfaces into a point cloud environment.
Surface Deviation Analysis: We determined the inward and outward deviations relative to the reference cylinder surface and evaluated their distribution on the body.
Circularity and Verticality Analysis: We examined the tank shape and geometric deviations through horizontal and vertical sections taken from different elevations.
Colored Deviation Maps: We facilitated the examination of the location and magnitude of deviations by visualizing the analysis results with colored surface maps.
Through our study, we created a measurement-based dataset regarding the current geometric condition of the tanks. We presented the results in a way that will provide a basis for technical inspection, maintenance planning, and engineering evaluations.
