In many projects, the real work only begins once the scanning is thought to be complete: If the point cloud doesn't match the correct format, coordinates, and density, time and costs increase in the CAD/BIM area. This article summarizes the practical questions that conclude the discussion during the delivery phase.

Acquisition of SYM/SAM data using a 3D laser scanner at a construction site by the sea.

1) Are the coordinate system and the transformation clear?

The map sheet and the scan will not match if the date, TM slice, transformation parameters and local scaling factor (if any) are not specified.

2) Would you like it "raw" or "processed"?

The provision of combined raw data and noise-reduced, segmented data differs. The specification should clearly state which variant is required.

3) Format: LAS/LAZ, E57, RCP…

The choice depends on the specific client environment. Format changes in late project phases are among the most expensive surprises, especially in large projects.

4) Need for color and HDR image quality.

Is it sufficient to use only geometry data, or is it also necessary to have visually supported documentation on site in order to answer questions such as "What was that detail?"?

5) Density and level of detail

Clouds that are too dense make the file appear larger; clouds that are too sparse reduce the level of detail. Depending on the project discipline, a balanced ratio is crucial.

6) Monitoring and reporting

Deviation detection using geodetic control points, random sampling on the map sheet and a delivery overview accelerates the acceptance processes.

The point cloud is not the "product" of 3D scanning; correctly defined, it is the raw material for the product . Clarifying questions early on reduces risk, both in the collaboration with KG Engineering and in the entire project.
