On the internet, you'll sometimes encounter the terms "3D laser scanning " and sometimes "3D laser scanning ." Often, they refer to the same technology: the creation of a dense point cloud of a building or terrain . The confusion usually stems not from the different terminology, but from a lack of clarity regarding which form of representation (2D drawing, 3D model, or BIM) is required. Do "3D" and "3B" mean the same thing?


In professional usage, this is usually the case : Both terms refer to the acquisition of XYZ coordinates with a laser scanner or a similar system . In Turkey, the term "3B" is sometimes used more in the engineering/cartography field; "3D" is more general and is more frequently used in international projects. The decisive factor is the end result , not the terminology .

So why are there two separate search processes?


  • The specification language may vary (local project / foreign customer).

  • Some teams believe that "3D" refers only to visual presentations (renderings, walkthroughs); however, in terms of measurement, the true value lies in measurable geometry .

  • Those searching for "3D laser scanning" often look for examples in "more extensive" projects such as industrial plants, existing building plans, pipelines and production facilities .

  1. Submission: Point cloud, 2D survey or BIM (Scan-to-BIM)?

  2. Accuracy class: The general term "millimeter" is not sufficient; the project tolerance must be specified.

  3. Access to the site: Opening hours, security precautions, areas that can be stopped.

  4. Coordinate system: Reference according to map sheet / zone division / plant discipline.

  5. The format ( CAD, IFC, LAS/LAZ etc.) should be selected early on according to the customer's environment.
